FAQ ABOUT WHITBY JET
Whitby Jet is a relatively soft gemstone, so it’s important to treat it with care:
- Avoid contact with harsh chemicals or abrasives.
- Clean gently with a soft, damp cloth – avoid ultrasonic cleaners.
- Store separately from other jewellery to prevent scratching.
- Keep away from extreme heat or direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
Our jewellery is handcrafted in our North Yorkshire workshop by skilled artisans with generations of experience. We take pride in traditional techniques and craftsmanship, ensuring every piece is made to the highest standard.
Whitby Jet has been used for ornamental purposes since the Bronze Age. It rose to prominence during the Victorian era, when Queen Victoria wore it in mourning. Its deep black sheen and connection to Yorkshire’s heritage make it both historically significant and fashionably timeless.
Whitby Jet is a rare, organic gemstone formed over millions of years from fossilised Araucaria (Monkey Puzzle) trees. Found exclusively along the North Yorkshire coastline, it has a rich black lustre and is highly prized for its deep colour and smooth finish. Historically popularised during the Victorian era, Whitby Jet remains a timeless and elegant gemstone.
All of our Whitby Jet is responsibly sourced directly from the North Yorkshire coast. We collect only from natural erosion sites to ensure environmental sustainability and preserve the heritage of this local gemstone.
